Course Description

English for Professional Communication is a live online course for adults who need to communicate more effectively in contemporary professional environments. The course develops spoken fluency, intelligibility, confidence, interaction, and professional appropriateness through realistic workplace communication tasks.

Every session prioritises speaking, listening, pronunciation, and real-time response. Short written or visual prompts may support speaking activities, but written communication, grammar essays, and academic writing are not course components.

Professional Speaking Foundations

Weeks 1–4 · Sessions 1–8

Build confidence, conversational control, intelligible pronunciation, and an appropriate professional tone.

Week 1 · Session 1 | Orientation and Spoken Diagnostic

Learning objective: Build rapport; explain expectations; establish a baseline.

Language and skills: Professional introductions; needs analysis; fluency sample; course routines.

Main performance task: Diagnostic interview and one-minute introduction.

Week 1 · Session 2 | Confident Professional Introductions

Learning objective: Introduce oneself, one’s role, and organisation clearly.

Language and skills: Names, roles, responsibilities, expertise, professional interests; follow-up questions.

Week 2 · Session 3 | Conversation Foundations

Learning objective: Start, maintain, and close professional conversations.

Language and skills: Openers, small talk, transitions, follow-up questions, active listening signals.

Week 3 · Session 6 | Pronunciation for Intelligibility I

Learning objective: Produce clearer key sounds and word endings.

Language and skills: High-impact consonants/vowels; final sounds; contractions; individual problem sounds.

Main performance task: Minimal-pair practice and personalised pronunciation recording.

Week 4 · Session 7 | Pronunciation for Intelligibility II

Learning objective: Use stress and pausing to make meaning clearer.

Language and skills: Word stress, sentence stress, thought groups, rhythm, linking, pausing.

Main performance task: Mark-and-deliver a short workplace update.

Week 4 · Session 8 | Tone, Intonation, and Professional Politeness

Learning objective: Adjust spoken tone for purpose and relationship.

Language and skills: Intonation; direct vs diplomatic language; formal, neutral, and friendly tone.

Main performance task: Deliver the same message to three different audiences.

Spoken-Performance Criteria

Fluency: Continuity, pace, responsiveness, and limited disruptive hesitation.

Intelligibility: Understandable sounds, word stress, sentence stress, rhythm, and volume.

Interaction: Active listening, turn-taking, questioning, clarification, and response to others.

Language control: Useful vocabulary, functional expressions, and sufficiently accurate grammar for meaning.

Professional appropriateness: Tone, politeness, concision, confidence, and audience awareness.

Task achievement: Completion of the communicative purpose and effective handling of follow-up questions.

Completion Requirements

  • At least 80% attendance
  • Active participation in professional speaking tasks
  • Submission of the required recorded oral tasks
  • Completion of the mid-course meeting simulation
  • Completion of the professional presentation
  • Completion of the final integrated oral assessment
  • An overall course score of at least 50%

Recommended Class Size

A cohort of 12–20 participants is recommended to protect meaningful speaking time and individual feedback. Larger cohorts require additional facilitation or more extensive breakout-room monitoring.

Certificate

A certificate of completion is awarded to participants who meet the attendance, participation, assessment, and minimum-score requirements stated above.
